I want to self-publish a novel. Should I do this through Amazon or create a website and allow people to download my e-book as a PDF?

If you break it up into 10 books and publish those all at once on Amazon, with the right marketing, you’re going to get a huge ranking boost (read why here). You can also pull them together into an omnibus. The more content you have available, the more marketing opportunities. If you decide to self-publish it as a 1M-word ebook, not only will you loose all that marketing potential, but no one is going to buy it, because no one buys novels that are 1M words long.
